Treatment Time Calculator
Calculate your Light Therapy session time based on irradiance, distance, and desired fluence.
Tip: Enter your device irradiance, target fluence, measuring tool, and treatment distance to estimate session time.
⏰ Treatment Time Calculator
The Treatment Time Calculator estimates how long your light-therapy session should last based on your device’s irradiance, target fluence (J/cm²), and treatment distance.
These figures provide an approximate guide for safe, effective photobiomodulation (PBM) sessions in both home and professional use, and does not replace medical or veterinary advice.
Always consult a qualified professional for individual guidance.
How to Use the Calculator
1. Enter Device Irradiance
Enter your device’s irradiance (mW/cm² or W/m²):
You can find this in your device specifications, or measure it using a calibrated spectrometer or solar power meter.
2. Set Target Fluence (Treatment Dosage)
Set your target fluence (J/cm²):
This is the amount of energy per unit area you want to deliver. Studies commonly use between 3–60 J/cm², depending on the goal (e.g., skin, muscle, or joint therapy).
3. Select Measuring Tool
Choose whether your irradiance reading was taken from a spectrometer or power meter instrument. This helps the calculator estimate adjustments for precision.
4. Choose Treatment Distance
Options such as Direct Skin Contact, 1-inch, 6-inches, etc. let you account for how much light intensity drops over distance.
Light disperses as it travels away from the skin, meaning the further the distance, the longer the treatment time required to achieve the same dose.
5. Calculate Treatment Time
Press “Calculate Treatment Time” to receive your estimated session length in minutes and seconds.
How It Works:
The calculator uses the standard photobiomodulation equation:
Treatment Time = Target Dose ÷ Irradiance
This formula estimates the time (in minutes and seconds) needed to deliver your chosen energy dose at your selected distance.
Results are approximate and can vary with factors like skin tone, fur density, or light angle.
Accuracy Notice:
Calculated results are approximations. Actual delivery varies with device optics/lens angle, surface curvature, skin tone or fur density, reflection/absorption, and meter calibration. For consistency, keep the same device, distance, and duration across sessions and follow professional guidance.
Match Fluence to Your Light Therapy Goal
This is a summary from LED Light Therapy Shops Fluence Guide to help you select the right fluence and wavelength to tailor light therapy to your specific goals—whether that’s calming inflammation, repairing tissue, or improving cognitive performance. The chart below outlines typical fluence ranges used in published photobiomodulation (PBM) research.

🔹 Acne and Surface Bacteria Reduction
Fluence: ~0.5–3 J/cm²
Light Type: Blue light (415–470 nm)
Mechanism: Targets bacterial porphyrins and sebaceous glands for clearer skin.
🔹 Pigmentation and Redness Control
Fluence: ~3–10 J/cm²
Light Type: Green light (520–560 nm)
Mechanism: Balances melanin, calms redness, and may ease migraine-related sensitivities.
🔹 Circulation and Inflammation Support
Fluence: ~3–30 J/cm²
Light Type: Yellow light (580–595 nm)
Mechanism: Enhances microcirculation and antioxidant activity.
🔹 Skin Repair and Collagen Synthesis
Fluence: ~3–30 J/cm²
Light Type: Red light (630–690 nm)
Mechanism: Stimulates cytochrome c oxidase, encouraging collagen formation and healing.
🔹 Muscle and Joint Pain Relief
Fluence: ~10–60 J/cm²
Light Type: Near-infrared (780–1074 nm)
Mechanism: Promotes deep-tissue recovery and mitochondrial stimulation.
🔹 Brain Health and Cognitive Function
Fluence: ~10–60 J/cm²
Light Type: Red + near-infrared (630–1074 nm; often 810–850 nm)
Mechanism: Supports neuronal metabolism, neuroprotection, and mental clarity.
These values are derived from peer-reviewed PBM research and are intended as general reference ranges. Always consult a qualified health or veterinary professional before applying light therapy for specific medical conditions.

Frequently Asked Questions
1. How accurate is the Treatment Time Calculator?
The LED Light Therapy Treatment Time Calculator provides an approximate treatment duration based on your device’s irradiance (mW/cm²), target fluence (J/cm²), and distance. Real-world results can vary due to factors like light angle, skin or fur density, and device calibration. For best consistency, measure irradiance using a professional spectrometer.
2. Can I use this calculator for veterinary light therapy?
Yes. The calculator supports both human and animal photobiomodulation (PBM) devices. When using it for animals, maintain a consistent distance and follow your manufacturer’s veterinary usage guidelines.
3. What’s the difference between fluence and irradiance?
- Irradiance is the light power intensity your device emits per area (mW/cm²).
- Fluence is the total energy delivered over time (J/cm²).
The calculator divides fluence by irradiance to estimate your treatment time.
